The large spillage was caused by a rupture to the tank of the lorry outside a loading bay to the rear of a shop in Hawthorn Road.

The incident happened just after 6am on Saturday and nearby drains were protected by firefighters on the scene, who covered them with environmental matting.

Sand provided by the shop was poured on to the road to prevent the diesel from spreading further.

Fire officers handed the incident back to the lorry driver to await recovery.
