Lower speed limits for county?

WEST Sussex County Council is preparing to review speed limits on West Sussex roads following new guidelines issued last week by the Department for Transport.

The review could lead to a reduction in speed limits on single carriage roads where the limit is 60 mph and opens up the prospect of more 20 and 30 mph limits in towns and villages.

But while this has been welcomed, West Sussex communities have warned that unless there is some form of enforcement, any reduction in speed limits will be totally ineffective.

A countywide review of the county council's speed management strategy is ready to start, and proposals on setting future speed limits are expected to be ready by next spring.

Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We have been awaiting this announcement for some time, and we had planned to take account of this latest guidance in updating our speed management strategy, and speed limit criteria, for the next five years.
