Luxor-inspired Lancing community cinema launched at morning event

Dozens turned out for the '˜Luxor Revival' Saturday morning pictures event which saw the parish hall transformed into a cinema.

The official opening on Saturday, December 10 was carried out by celebrity Carol Cleveland, of Monty Python fame, who cut the ribbon and was presented with a bouquet.

All attending children received a specially made badge and sweets, which they ate while watching a Looney Tunes cartoon.

Councillor Gloria Eveleigh said: “It was lovely to see all those Luxorinies who attended enjoying their sweets and laughing their socks off.”

During the intermission, compare Councillor Geoff Patmore taught everyone to sing the specially written ‘Luxoriny’ song, which Councillor Jean Turner danced to.

Dressed in a colourful suit, Max Miller look-alike Bob Eaten entertained the children.

Councillor David Lambourne, who instigated the cinema and came dressed in 1940s attire alongside Councillor Robin Monk, said: “We were very pleased with the event – it went off very well like a real cinema!”

The winners of a Seaside School Christmas card competition linked to the cinema opening were announced on the day.

Elif Aslan was awarded first prize and Harry Pilcher was named as runner-up.

Elif’s design will feature on the chair’s official Christmas card, while all 109 entries were displayed in the foyer hall.

The winners of a school reminiscence project, which encouraged pupils to listen to their relatives memories of the Saturday morning pictures, were announced as Bayley Jacobs and her grandfather Paul, and Henry Judd and his grandmother Veronica.

They were welcomed and escorted to special seats.

The event marked the launch of the community cinema, which will show family films one Monday evening a month from January, 23.

Tickets will cost £3 and a bar will be available.
