Police said they were called to Winchester Road at 10.33am this morning when the dogs were witnessed to have killed one and to be ‘ripping apart’ another that was left seriously injured.

Specialist dog handlers were called to the scene and police said they also requested help from the RSPCA.

The incident was still being dealt with at 1.30pm, with the dogs, thought to be bull mastiff crosses, contained, according to police.

The seriously injured animal has been for treatment by a vet, and police said work is now underway to safely remove the dogs from the garden, with no danger to the public.

Police said the man from Worthing was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being a responsible person failing to prevent the causing of unnecessary suffering to an animal. He remained in custody this afternoon.
