According to a spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service, paramedics were called to High Street at around 10am to reports of an 'elderly gentleman' having collapsed.

Members of the public were already attempting to revive the man when they arrived, using a public defibrillator installed next to The Bridge Inn.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews and the public, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The morning's tragic incident shows the importance of public defibrillators, which have been installed across Adur in no small part thanks to a campaign set up by Adur councillor Joss Loader during her time as chairman of the council.

Joss launched her campaign in memory of her father, who sadly passed away aged 49 after suffering a sudden, catastrophic heart attack in Libya in the 1980s. A nearby defibrillator, which were not yet available for public access, may have saved his life.

"A resident got in touch with me this morning to let me know that somebody had been taken ill in Shoreham town centre earlier today and that members of the public were using one of our publicly-accessible defibrillators to try to save his life," said Joss, whose campaign was match funded by the Sussex Heart Charity.

"I was so sorry to hear that the gentleman had sadly died and my heart goes out to his family.

"I would like to offer sincere thanks to the passers-by who worked so hard to try to save his life and accessed the defibrillator that's installed outside The Bridge Inn.

"We have some really great people in our town and I know they did everything they could in difficult weather conditions."

Sixteen defibrillators have been installed in Adur as part of Joss' campaign, with others also installed separately. They are available for use 24/7 by dialling 999 and requesting the access code.
