Man fined £1,000 for fly-tipping in Findon and Arundel

LOCAL businesses are being warned to correctly dispose of their waste or face fines, or even prosecution, if it is passed on to fly-tippers.

The decision comes after Silverio Martins, from Littlehampton, became the third person in a month to be punished for fly-tipping in Arun.

Mr Martins was fined 1,000 and ordered to pay 250 costs after being found guilty of two offences relating to fly-tipping at Worthing Magistrates Court last month on April 2.

He said in his defence that he was working for JB Rubbish Clearance '“ the business owned by John Barnett, also of Littlehampton, who was sentenced to four months imprisonment in March after being found guilty of 10 separate fly-tipping offences.

Both cases were brought about as a result of the business being caught dumping waste in Findon and Arundel after charging customers up to 50 to remove it.

Now the Council is acting to remind local businesses of their legal obligation to dispose of waste only through registered contractors.
