Man pleads guilty to stealing from homeware store

A MAN pleaded guilty to stealing a steam mop from a homeware store, at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Lee Brown, 48, of St Anselms Road, Worthing, took the £79.99 mop from The Range, in Ham Road, Worthing, on June 28.

Kevin Thompson, prosecuting, said the store manager reviewed CCTV which showed Mr Thompson leaving the store with the item.

Mr Thompson said: “The defendant was with a female looking at the mop. A short time later the manager noticed the area was untidy and saw a security tag on the floor.”

The mop has not been recovered.

Mr Brown said: “I’m sorry I took it. I lost my father last year, I didn’t do it for drugs, drink or anything like that.”

District Judge Peter Crabtree gave Mr Brown ‘credit’ for his guilty plea. Mr Brown was asked to pay a £100 fine, £79.99 compensation for the mop, prosecuting costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.
