Man pleads guilty to injuring dog

A MAN has pleaded guilty to standing on a puppy’s leg and causing injuries so severe that the limb had to be amputated.

Barry King, 33, previously of Lyndhurst Road, Worthing, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to his tan and white bull terrier by failing to provide the puppy with prompt veterinary treatment after he had trodden on him.

Chichester Magistrates Court heard on Friday, November 8, that King stood on Bonzo, just 16 weeks old at the time, breaking his back leg.

The RSPCA were called in January after a member of the public heard a man shouting and a puppy screaming.

Inspectors arrived at the address and found the puppy with a badly injured leg.

Bonzo was taken to a vet who found the limb was so badly broken that it had to be amputated. The injury was consistent with a heavy weight pressing down on him.

RSPCA inspector Andrew Kirby said: “This poor puppy must have been in an incredible amount of pain as the vet found the limb was completely snapped at one end. The damage was so bad that there was no way they could operate on the leg or save it, so the kindest thing to do was amputate.

“The witnesses said they could hear Bonzo screaming in absolute agony, so how King could have just stood by and not immediately taken him to a vet is just beyond me.”

Bonzo has since been re-homed.

King will be sentenced next month.
