Lucy Evans said: “I feel so saddened to read the awful news about Stuart Christie.

“I worked with Stuart and his wife for many years at the RSPCA and was extremely fond of them both. As a couple they were adorable, and totally inseparable.

“Stuart was a true gentleman, really thoughtful and decent and doted on his wife.”

Shirley Pearce added: “This is such a terrible shock to hear such sad news.

“My husband, Mike, and I used to work with Stuart and his wife for over 15 years at the RSPCA.

“We just can’t imagine what his wife is going through. They were a very loving couple that never went out unless they were together.”

In a separate incident last Tuesday, a report of a body in the sea off Worthing beach sparked a search but nothing was found.
