Worthing, Adur and Arun are well-represented on the Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2016 shortlist, the results of which will be decided by a public vote.

The farmers’ market category is awash with local entries, including markets at Arundel, Steyning, Worthing, Slindon and Shoreham in the mix.

Pie manufacturer Higgidy, in Shoreham, Littlehampton’s East Beach Café and Hammerpot Brewery, in Poling, are also shortlisted in other categories.

Paula Seagar, co-director of Natural Partnerships CIC, which run the awards as a not-for-profit scheme, said: “The competition is set to be very tough this year with an impressive line up of candidates.

“These unique awards are all about boosting the market for Sussex produce and letting people in the county know about the fantastic food and drink grown and made in Sussex, as well as the many great restaurants, pubs, cafés and food shops where it can be bought and enjoyed.”

In Worthing, the Great Little Farmers’ Market, which takes place along Goring Road on the first Saturday of the month, is shortlisted despite only launching in March.

Hammerpot Brewery head brewer Lee Mitchell, who supports the market and is nominated for his own award, said: “It’s our 10th year in business as part of Worthing’s fantastic food and drink scene and we hope the local community will get behind us and The Great Little Farmers’ Market in the public vote.”

Camilla Stephens, co-founder of pie manufacturer Higgidy, said it was delighted to be shortlisted for Sussex Food Producer of the Year.

She said: “We’re so proud of our Sussex home, and it means a lot to us to be recognised by our consumers and community.

“We’ve just launched the Higgidy Picnic Guide, which includes contributions from one of our favourite Sussex bloggers, as well as exciting new recipes from our Shoreham-by-Sea kitchen.”
