Mayor lights festive beacon

THE lighting of the Meridian Beacon by the Mayor of Peacehaven, Cllr Pauline Howard, heralded the start of the town's festive fireworks display.

After the ceremony a crowd of 300 townsfolk congregated at The Dell for a spectacular firework display and bonfire.

Atop the fire was an effigy of Mrs Twit, from Roald Dahl's book The Twits, created by pupils from Telscombe Cliffs Primary School.

Steve Keogh, the town council's leisure and amenity manager, said: 'The fireworks display was outstanding and there was a fantastic festive atmosphere.

'Father Christmas made an appearance and everybody had a great time.'

The Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club provided Christmas music and popcorn for the crowds and the town council, which organised the event, gave free glow-sticks to youngsters.
