MEP shows his bottle in Euro rules fight

A WINE maker from West Sussex faces a £30,000 bill because of a new EU Directive on bottle sizes.

Jerry Schooler of Lurgashall Winery has been told that his liquers, meads and fruit wines must now be sold in 70, 50 or 35 centilitre bottles, rather than the 75 and 37.5 centilitre bottles he has been using for 24 years.

Now his MEP, Daniel Hannan, has taken up the issue on his behalf because he believes the bottle ban has no basis in law.

Mr Schooler is an award-winning winemaker, whose customers include royal palaces, English Heritage and National Trust.

Jerry (74), originally from New England, has been making wines, meads and liquers for almost 25 years and produces 400,000 bottles a year.

He faces the costly process of having to replace not only bottles, but labels, boxes and corks too.
