METERING IS PART OF WATER SOLUTION

South East Water has welcomed the Government's decision to begin consultation on compulsory metering proposals for the south east.

The company believes compulsory metering is just one of the steps that can be taken in water scarce areas to help manage demand, and ensure there is enough water for both existing and future customers without imposing undue stress on the environment.

Furthermore, South East Water has always actively promoted metering as the fairest method of charging customers for their water, as they only pay for what is used.

David Shore, Director of Assets, said: "We also believe having a meter is an effective way of helping to manage demand for water, as customers can directly influence how much they use by making a few lifestyle changes, such as installing water efficient appliances, taking showers instead of baths, and turning the tap off when cleaning their teeth.

"However, compulsory metering is not the answer to the current drought problems. For South East Water, it would take a substantial programme of works, over a period of years, to install meters in all unmetered properties.

"Nor is metering, alone, the solution to meeting future demand for water. It must remain part of a twin track approach which also allows us to develop new resources, such as our proposed Clay Hill Reservoir, as well as continuing with our effective demand management strategies.

"Clearly metering does have a role to play in water resources planning, and so we will be evaluating whether this is an option which South East Water should also follow."
