Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “I hope that wherever people are, they will take a moment to reflect and remember.

“Today is a time to remember those who lost their lives and their families, and to remember the courage and dedication of the emergency services and all those who helped in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“This tragedy had a big impact on our county and it is right that we unite in our thoughts and take time to remember.”

West Sussex County Council will mark the minute’s silence across all of its offices and fire stations, and flags will be flown at half-mast at council buildings.

Other minute silences will also be held around the county including at Adur Civic Centre.
