“Miraculous” escape for young girl trapped underneath van in Worthing

A YOUNG girl had a “miraculous” escape after she became trapped underneath a vehicle.

Emergency services, including firefighters, police, paramedics and Sussex Air Ambulance, attended the junction between Loxwood Avenue and Broomfield Avenue, Worthing, at 10.43am today (November 30) after a girl, believed to be six, and an older woman became trapped underneath a van.

It is believed the girl was walking with her mother and sister, when she and her grandmother ended up under the car after two vehicles collided at the junction between both roads.

Witnesses at the scene described it as a “miracle” that neither was seriously hurt or killed, although both were taken to Worthing Hospital, with the older woman suffering from suspected broken legs.

Richard Jones, from R Jones Carpentry, was replacing fascia boards in Loxwood Avenue when he heard a “deafening scream”.

The 37-year-old said: “I heard a really big bang, then heard a deafening scream. At first I thought it was coming from Broadwater Green, but it was down the road. It was only when I saw all the fire engines coming past that I realised what was happening.”
