Worthing assistant manager Mell Diffey is joining the team, having completed the store’s London to Brighton charity cycle last year.

She explained: “Twelve months ago, I got on my bike for the first time in years and started to train for a little ride of 54 miles, otherwise known as the London to Brighton ride.

“I raised over £1,500 individually and Morrisons’ south east supermarkets raised a staggering £185,000. The 72 riders took off from Clapham Common, all pedalling madly to reach Brighton.

“I completed that in just over five hours - not bad for a lass who had not been on a bike for a few years. I remember my first training session so well, three miles and I wanted to quit, it hurt really badly!”

Now, she will be fulfilling the task of cycling from London to Amsterdam from October 8 to 11, as part of the Morrisons Raise a Smile for Sue Ryder crew.

Mell said: “This year, we are going bigger and better and completing a whopping 455km or pure sweat, determination and grit, with the possibility of a few grunts, groans and tears along the way.”

The store in Newland Road, Worthing, will be fundraising throughout the summer but donations can also be made via www.virginmoneygiving.com to Mell Diffey.

She said: “Sue Ryder is a great charity providing incredible care to people with life-limiting illnesses.”
