Move to keep halloween safe

Arun District Council and local police are making plans to ensure this year's halloween and bonfire night festivities are safe and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Eddies in Felpham Road, Bognor Regis is among traders displaying posters in the run up to October 31. They warn under-16s that the sale of flour and eggs to them will be restricted if they believe the items are going to be used to cause mischief.

According to police, reports of flour and egg throwing unfortunately have been on the rise in previous years.

The posters, funded by Arun Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, are just one initiative to try to prevent trouble this year. Police have also said they will increase patrols and will be carrying out their own operations.

Arun District Council's Crime Prevention Officer Trevor Cox designed the leaflets. He said: 'We have been talking to local traders to ensure the sale of flour and eggs to youngsters is restricted in instances where they believe the items will be used to cause trouble.

'We are more than happy for people to have a good time but to have fun at the expense of other people is simply not acceptable.'

Councillor Roger Elkins, Arun's cabinet member for community safety, added: 'This time of year can be great fun and we are determined to do what we can to make sure everyone enjoys it. Unfortunately, the festivities can be used by some as an excuse to throw eggs, flour or fireworks and generally harass and intimidate others.

'This is just one of a number of initiatives that we have in the district to stop anti-social behaviour.'

Posters have also been produced which people can put up to say they don't want trick or treaters calling at their homes. The posters are available from Bognor Regis and Littlehampton Police Station.

If you experience any problems over the halloween or bonfire night period, they can be reported to the council's anti-social behaviour team on 01903 737870 or by email to [email protected]
