MP and councillors fight to defend gap

Worthing Borough Council previously asked land owners what they had available to meet the borough’s housing needs.

The owner of the Goring Gap proposed it as a suitable site for 1,400 homes.

A public meeting held last year saw more than 600 local people attend to voice their opposition.

Sir Peter said: “A great deal of work has gone on behind the scenes, as well as in public. The efforts of the Ilex Conservation Group, the Goring Residents’ Association, the Ferring Conservation Group and the Ferring Parish Council should not go unnoticed. Myself and the local councillors shall continue to work with all concerned to ensure local voices are heard throughout this process.”

While planning officers rejected the gap as a suitable site for development in an initial assessment, Sir Peter and the councillors are keen to remind them that the gap should remain as it is with the Worthing cabinet expected to carry out a formal review at the end of the month.
