Mr Price, a former top-flight rugby player for Perpignan and Glamorgan Wanderers, introduced Spanish as a subject at the school in 1989.

He was a member of the school’s management team for more than 25 years and was involved in ‘key decisions’ during that time.

Mr Price said: “When a man comes to 60 it’s time to go. I’ve had a really enjoyable career. A lot of students have gone on to do wonderful things in their lives, the staff have been brilliant and the kids have kept me young.”

He said he intended to do some travelling – including the 2017 Lions Tour in New Zealand – and spend time with his immediate family.

Carolyn Dickinson, Worthing High’s head teacher, said: “He built strong relationships with students which inspired many to achieve very high grades.

“Rhys has developed some outstanding projects with companies, creating opportunities for our students to experience some very unique work related learning activities which have gained national recognition.

“Rhys will be very much missed by students and colleagues when he retires in May this year.”

A Facebook group has been set up in tribute to Mr Price’s career.
