A PENSIONER charged with his wife’s murder appeared before a judge at Lewes Crown Court on Tuesday.

Retired Dudley Boakes, 79, was in court for a preliminary hearing following the death of his wife, Sandra, 70, at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, on Saturday, April 5.

Police had been called to an incident at the couple’s home on the evening of April 3.

A post-mortem examination showed that Mrs Boakes died of serious head injuries.

Mr Boakes was remanded in custody but was told he had every right to apply for bail.

He will next appear before the court on June 27, when he will be given the chance to enter a plea.

If there is to be a trial, it will be scheduled to start on September 22, and will be expected to last two weeks.

During the hearing, Mr Boakes spoke only to confirm his name.

He was originally charged with attempted murder while his wife fought for her life in hospital, but the charge was upgraded following her death.
