Music Festival weekend hailed as ‘outstanding’

THE Worthing Music and Arts Festival has celebrated two weekends of musical talent from all ages in the piano and instrumental classes.

Performers were given constructive feedback by judges Liz Childs, Graeme Humphrey and Adam Barker.

Junior age groups performed in the piano section on February 6 and 7 which saw the Worthing Junior Pianist of the Year award presented to Matthew McDonald who played Melody by Khatchaturian and Jack in a Juke Box by Pam Wegdewood.

Festival secretary Jan Spooner­-Swabey said Matthew played ‘outstandingly’.

Intermediate and senior performers played on February 13 and 14 which saw the Worthing Young Pianist of the Year award presented to Sebastian Power.

The Senior Concerto class was held on Saturday and included performances from Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D Minor, Shostakovich’s 1st Cello Concerto and Mozart’s 20th Piano Concerto in D Minor played by Maria Luc.

Mrs Spooner­-Swabey said: “The concertos were all outstanding.”

Maria Luc, who is studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, ended the evening with a performance in the Recital class.

Singing classes begin tomorrow at Field Place and speech and drama starts on Monday at Worthing Dome.

Performances from the festival can be seen in the Festival Highlights Concert on Saturday, March 7, at 7pm at the Emmanuel United Reformed Church.
