Nando's, Prezzo and Côte '˜proposed tenants' for Montague Centre

Major restaurant chains including Prezzo and Nando's are among the potential new tenants for the Montague Centre, a report has revealed.

New River Retail’s plans to convert the centre into a restaurant hub will be considered next week.

Patisserie Valerie was previously confirmed as the first planned tenant should the plans go ahead.

But a new report has now revealed Prezzo, Nando’s, Byron, Bill’s and Côte as other targets.

The Local Data Company report reads: “The proposed new tenants for Montague Centre are Patisserie Valerie, Prezzo, Nando’s, Byron, Bill’s and Côte.

“These are strong operators, with consistent growth in their outlets over the last three years.

“For example, Bill’s has nearly quadrupled its store numbers from 15 in 2013 to 72 in 2016 (+380%). All these prospective tenants do not have a presence in the town.”

The plans are now recommended for approval on Wednesday, after marketing evidence and an analysis of the health of the high street was submitted.

Case officer Gary Peck wrote: “On balance, your officers consider that the Montague Centre is in need of investment.

“The retail character of town centres is clearly changing and local planning authorities are encouraged to be flexible where possible.”

The proposals would see nine of the existing retail units converted for food and drink use.

A glass kiosk would be constructed at the northern end, with Patisserie Valerie confirmed as the intended tenant.

The Worthing Society submitted a petition of more than 1,500 signatures against its construction, objecting to the felling of three sycamore trees.
