Safety first has always been the mainstay of Littlehampton’s Arun Youth Aqua Centre.
And now funding of almost £10,000 from Sport England’s small grants programme is helping reinforce the message.
The £9,466 windfall has paid for a further addition to the centre’s fleet of rescue boats.
It will enable more youngsters to take part in sailing and canoeing activities run from the centre, in Hendon Avenue.
Roger Elliman, principal of the centre, said: “As a Royal Yachting Association recognised training centre we are acutely aware of our responsibilities to maintain appropriate rescue cover for the youngsters taking part in our activities.
“The centre has available, thanks to various grants and its own fund-raising efforts, a significant dinghy fleet.
“During the past three years, we have also, through our own resources and development programme, increased the number of qualified volunteers able to assist with activities on the water.
“Now, thanks to this Sport England funding, we can increase our membership, encouraging more youngsters to take part in sailing than otherwise would be the case, by some 20 per cent.”
The new boat arrived just before the centre’s season ended and will be in full use for the the new season, from May 5.
