Hastings Borough Council’s cabinet will discuss a plan to use the money from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund on Monday (August 8).

Hastings has been selected as one of three Fisheries Local Action Groups in the UK for a second time and hopes to have the funding confirmed in October.

Councillors will consider a local development strategy with a list of ways to use the £800,000 to tackle the decline in the fishing industry, one of which is to hold a festival next year, encompassing the whole of the seafront, were the council to receive the money.

The strategy focuses on three areas: creating a sustainable fleet and supply chain, protecting the environment, and developing the fishery’s identity.

Other activities in these areas include ‘developing the Hastings fish brand’, supporting apprentices, reducing energy costs and getting a new ice maker.

The £800,000 is subject to approval by the Maritime Management Organisation and the council hopes to hear its decision by October 7, after submitting the strategy.
