New MYP calls for more support for vulnerable youths

Stephen Gearing, who is in year eight at Steyning Grammar School, has been elected as the East Arun, Adur and Worthing member for the UK Youth Parliament.

He was voted in by young people in the area, to represent them and put forward their views to the Government.

Stephen, who will hold office for two years, said: “I am really pleased to have won and want to thank everyone for their support.

“I will be running regular meetings in local schools to hear as many young voices as I can. will take the views to Westminster and fight for change where needed.”

The UK Youth Parliament consists of 300 full members and a similar number of deputies, with four constituencies across West Sussex.

More than 20,000 youngsters aged 11 to 18 in West Sussex voted in the March elections. The winner in each constituency was elected Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) and the person in second place was appointed deputy. The deputy’s role is to support the MYP and can attend meetings in their place when needed.

Stephen believes more young people need to be involved in politics, especially if the voting age is to be reduced to 16.

He pointed out: “To vote wisely, you must understand our political system and I would like to see this being a compulsory subject taught in school.

“I also want to see improvements in the care system and support for vulnerable youngsters. There is a lot to do!”

Sebastian Maxted, a year-nine student at Angmering School, will be his deputy.

Stephen said: “I am lucky to have such a passionate deputy to support me through the next two years. Together, I hope Sebastian and I will represent our constituents’ views honestly and with enthusiasm.”

As well as attending meetings in Westminster, Stephen will be working closely with MPs following the general election on May 7.
