New rules for '˜eyesore' camper vans?

Others have defended owners’ right to park in Mill Road, saying new rules would be unfair.

Councillor Kay Wagland, chairman of the traffic committee, said Arundel Town Council has received several complaints.

“I do not think anyone’s unhappy about the occasional camper van there for a night or two. It’s when they are there for six months,” she said.

The ideal solution, she says, is a traffic regulation order from West Sussex County Council to stop camper vans parking for more than a few days, for example.

However the town counil were told this would not be introduced until other methods had been explored.

She asked residents to report vehicles breaking highway laws to police.

Vehicles must display parking lights when parked on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph. Mill Road is a 60 mph road.

“We need people to go to the police with dates, times, and identity information for vehicles,” she added.

But is it a real issue? Writing on the Littlehampton Gazette Facebook page, Lucie Stirling said: “They are an eyesore and depriving visitors of free parking.” She suggested a maximum stay of five days.

Pauline Chaloner said: “Some have been there months and one in particular is an eyesore.”

However John Hodder, who parks his camper van in Mill Road, said: “People parking camper vans there bring money into the town.”

He acknowledged his van is ‘dirty and needs a clean’ but wondered if ‘snobbery’ would end up dictating parking regulations.

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said the town council is compiling evidence for an application for parking restrictions but had not yet submitted it.
