New spring in the step at Winchelsea

East Sussex County Council has recently refurbished the flight of steps which lead down from Mill Road to Queen Elizabeth’s Well.

James Holland, from the county council, said: “Our Rights of Way team re-laid each of the 89 historic sandstone steps linking Winchelsea Town with the A259.

“The steps, located in the Winchelsea conservation area, had been closed to the public for 18 months as they were in a dangerous condition.

“These improvements have been made available through European funding as part of the Accessing the Countryside project. It is co-financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) under the Interreg IVA.”

Queen Elizabeth’s Well was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Winchelsea in 1573.

It was one of the six open wells from which the townsfolk drew their water, the others being Pipe Well, Friars Well, St. Katherine’s Well, New Well and Vale or St. Leonard’s Well.
