Ninfield plant sale

HECTIC scenes are not normally associated with the calm and genteel world of gardening. But where plant bargains are concerned it can be every man - or woman - for themself. Trading in Ninfield Memorial Hall on Saturday morning was, well - "brisk".

The village hall car park was close to full well before the hall's official opening time. In a first-come-first-served world, it was the early birds who secured the best plants and the best bargains.

Ninfield Horticultural Society's annual plant sale is one of the best money-spinners in its calendar. Members donate to the cause their home-grown pot plants, their seedlings and whatever else is surplus to requirements in garden, potting shed and greenhouse.

The result is enthusiast-grown healthy plants at realistic prices.

Tomatoes vied with cacti and succulents for the attention of sharp-eyed buyers.

Trays of cabbage seedlings were ranged near potted lavender plants.

For society show secretary Rose Franks it was pure heaven.

By lunch-time when the laden tables had been stripped as effectively as a plague of locusts, Rose was able to report that the sale had raised 201 towards society funds - principally the cost of staging the summer show on August 18.
