‘No excuse’ for dog walkers who ignore rule

DOGS running loose at a nature reserve are disturbing the local wildlife and must be kept on leads, according to the council.

Widewater Lagoon in Lancing is a wildlife reserve and is covered by a council order stating dogs must be kept on leads at all times.

A spokesman for Lancing Parish Council (LPC) said: “Because there have been so many incidents reported of dogs off leads, interfering with wildlife, especially birdlife, LPC, in conjunction with Adur District and Worthing Borough Councils, have put up signs telling dog owners that all dogs must be kept on leads in the reserve.

“Every access point has an appropriate sign and so there can be no excuse for not observing the dog control orders.”

According to the council, the dog warden will be paying special attention to dogwalkers at the Widewater Reserve in the near future.

Failure to observe the orders can carry a fine of up to £1,000 if taken to court, or a fixed penalty notice of up to £50.
