Worthing Borough Council said it had ‘no plans’ make changes to the children’s section of Durrington Cemetery, despite a petition suggesting the contrary.
The petition was set up to ‘stop’ the Friends of Durrington Cemetery group from ‘removing the fence and personal items’ on children’s graves, claiming no consultation had taken place.
It had more than 660 signatures by the time the council responded on Monday.
The Friends of Durrington Cemetery (FODC) group was founded in June to help care for the area as part of the Findon Valley Residents’ Association (FVRA).
A spokesman for the council said: “Obviously there are rules surrounding what can and cannot be placed on plots to preserve the integrity of the cemetery for all those with loved ones at Durrington but we can assure everyone that there are no plans to change the layout of this section or how the council manages it.”
Any future changes would be subject to the ‘widest possible consultation’, the spokesman said.
The next FODC meeting will be held at 12.30pm on Tuesday, September 25, at Durrington Cemetery Chapel. The group was approached for comment.
