Northbrook College’s propmaking foundation degree team was thrilled to be asked to customise a Biker Scout helmet, which will form part of the three-day event at the ExCeL London Exhibition Centre.

A total of 40 Biker Scout helmets have been provided to talented artists and studios as part of a charity helmet project, sponsored by leading replica props company RS Prop Masters.

These are being customised for display to Star Wars fans of all ages from all around the world. The helmets will then be auctioned online, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Make-A-Wish UK.

Dan Jenkins, propmaking course leader, said: “It’s been an absolute privilege to be involved in the Biker Scout Project and the end result really showcases the students’ skills and creative vision.

“Images of their Biker Scout helmet are all over the internet and getting lots of attention from an international community of propmakers, companies and fans.”

First and second year students based at Northbrook Theatre in Durrington put their own spin on the helmets, used by specially trained stormtroopers in Star Wars, using 2004 Japanese animated film Howl’s Moving Castle as inspiration.

The fantasy film, scripted and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, was based on the novel of the same name by British writer Diana Wynne Jones.

The student team comprised designer Sharon Huls and makers Arna María Kristjánsdóttir, Tomas Marin, Cristina Lahuerta, Jamey Richards, Kathryn Lockyer, Maya Lohse, Megan Rogers, Roxanne Saunders and Suzanne Law.

Their design features the castle belonging to the eponymous wizard Howl. Using industry standard model-making techniques, they have hand crafted every detail, right down to the individually-applied bricks.
