Can it really be February already? Gosh and golly!

The Village Hall was packed last Saturday for the annual Wit and Wisdom Quiz hosted by the Conservation Society. The usual high standard of questions and competitors made for a most enjoyable evening, even if we were pipped at the post! Thanks to all concerned, not least Lynn who set the questions.

I’m sure there will be a packed Village Hall today (Friday) to listen to Helen Yemm speak to the Horticultural Society on how she downsized from a 2 acre garden to a much smaller plot. Helen’s column is one of the first I turn to in the Telegraph on Saturday mornings, for her wise advice and sensible recommendations. I am sure everyone will leave the lecture full of tips and ideas.

The meeting starts at 2.30pm, and visitors are very welcome to attend; the one-off fee is £2, although you may be tempted to join for the year when you see how your membership card gives you discounts in lot of local nurseries etc, as well as a range of interesting lectures and the fun of the Shows.

Dance Club are in the Village Hall for sequence dancing, starting at 7.30pm. In the Pretious Sports Hall, Badminton clubs meet at 5.30pm (Primary) 6.30pm (Secondary), and 8pm (Adults).

Northiam Bowling Club will be holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday 2nd February in Northiam Village Hall from 10am – 12 noon. Entry is 30p, and there will be a tombola and refreshments available.

This month’s Messy Church starts at 4pm on Sunday, with stories, craft etc around the story of Abraham and Sarah. Everyone is very welcome!

On Monday, the Bridge Club meets in the Jenkins Room at 2pm alongside Short Mat Bowls in the main Village Hall. Badminton and Zumba are held in the Pretious Sports Hall at 5.45pm and 8.15pm respectively, and Classical Pilates in the Village Hall at 6.30pm.

The Over 60s hold their AGM on Tuesday, meeting in the Village Hall at 2pm. The business will be followed by one of Ruth’s quizzes and a cream tea!

Pilates classes are held at 9am and 10am in the Village Hall each Wednesday, and Coffee Stop brews up in the Church Centre between 10am and 12 noon, and all are welcome to pop in. In the Village Hall, Short Mat Bowls starts at 2pm.

Northiam WI meet on the first Wednesday of each month in the Jenkins Room, starting at 2pm. This month the speaker will be Mr Brian Freeland with a talk entitled Around the World in 80 Plays. The competition will be an item of theatre memorabilia, and there will be the usual raffle, flower of the month competition and book sale.

Northiam Seniors’ Club meets on Thursday, with their usual mix of chat, entertainment, good food and interesting things to do. If you are interested in joining this lively group, please call Ann Lee (252343) or Jane Winnifrith (252973). The Lacemakers Group meet in the Jenkins Room at 6.45pm.

For all those quiz fans out there, the Bonfire Society is starting regular fortnightly quizzes in the Muddy Duck. The first one is on Thursday 7th at 7.30pm. It costs just £1.50 per person, with no limit on team numbers – I suspect the size of the tables will be self-limiting! Anyway, come along and keep the grey matter working!

Showtimers are recruiting for their next production, which will be a 50s and 60s Variety Show of song, dance and comedy in the Village Hall on April 27th, May 3rd and May 4th. Volunteers for on and off the stage are welcome to contact Caroline Poyton 252918 – experience isn’t necessary.

And if performing isn’t your thing, but you like a spot of nostalgia, Showtimers are organising a 50s and 60s themed Village Hop on Saturday 30th March – make a not in your diary.
