Dan Patel, of Ramcare, in Penhill Road, Lancing, employed 21-year-old apprentice Steven Bass in January, training him as a technician.

The business is now committed to seeing him through his NVQ training, and hopes he will continue on to a degree-level apprenticeship.

Mr Patel said: “He is doing well, and much better than we expected him to.

“He has four A-levels and we would like to send him through the various levels of training, up to degree level, as well as putting him through our own training programme.”

As well as the apprenticeship training provided by Northbrook College, Ramcare is also putting Steven through the company’s own training programme.

Mr Patel said: “As well as his college training, it allows us to do things how we want, and teach him how we do things in the business.

“We give him a number of different tasks. When he does one thing, he is assessed, and if it is done well, he moves on to the next thing.”

Ramcare is now looking to appoint a second apprentice, with a view to training them in a sales role.

Mr Patel said: “We are looking to get another one in to work in a more external role.

“With the A-level results coming up soon, we want to catch someone similar to Steven,.

“We’re looking for someone with a strong personality and we will hold a series of interviews with a shortlist of candidates to get the best person for the apprenticeship.”

Following the company’s experience with apprentices, Mr Patel would recommend them to other businesses.

He said: “It works for us and we would recommend the process for others, too.”

But apprenticeship manager Brenda Cook is still appealing for more apprentices and potential employers to come forward.

She said: ““It is easy to look at what jobs are available.

“You just need to register your details, and apply for any job in which you are interested.

“You can even set up alerts on your mobile phone, so that you will be notified if a job becomes available that you might be interested in.”

For more information about apprenticeships, or to register interest in employing one, contact Brenda on 01903 273167.
