One of Bognor's oldest residents passes away

The funeral of Doreen Comery will be held on Monday, April 27, at Chichester Crematorium.

Mrs Comery died peacefully on Easter Sunday aged 102 years and 15 days. She had lived at Saxby Lodge in Victoria Drive for the previous two-and-a-half years.

When she reached 100 in March 2007, she put her longevity down to liking chocolate oranges.

She said then: "I have had a chocolate orange every week since just after the second world war when they started to be made. I just like the taste of chocolate and always have."

Mrs Comery also keenly tackled crosswords in her favourite daily newspaper.

She was born in Long Eaton, Notts, and had a brother and a sister. Her father was the secretary of the local co-operative society.

She grew up in Long Eaton and worked as a law clerk before she married her late husband, Jack, in 1931. They moved to Middleton which he knew through his work as a furniture salesman.

The couple returned to Long Eaton after the second world war before they went back to Middleton when Mr Comery retired in 1959.

They moved to Felpham and then Bognor seafront which Mrs Comery left for Saxby Lodge. Mr Comery died ten years ago.

Mrs Comery is survived by two daughters, six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
