A new online hub is being set up to help consumers find buyers, groups and schemes which have genuine ‘green’ credentials.
Heather Godfrey, 66, from Steyning, plans to run Going It Green as a new search hub for the consumer who is looking for companies, initiatives or groups that have environmentally conscious ethics and values.
Heather said the idea is similar to that of TripAdvisor or Checkatrade, which allow those who have used a service to comment upon it. Organisations will be listed on the site, free of charge.
“The person placing the listing will say what they do that they consider to be green,” she said. “People will give them a rating for whatever they do - thumbs up or thumbs down.”
Companies will not be able to buy their way to the top of the listings, as they can on some search engines, although they will be able to pay in order to have a more detailed entry on the site.
Heather said she was prompted to do something to bring environmental groups together after heading up to London to take part in the Climate March in November last year.
An estimated 70,000 people took part, many of them representing fairly small organisations.
“What struck me was that many of the marchers represented small green initiatives; as did we,” she explains on her website.
“Thousands of different organisations, each with their own message.
“Those supporting vegetarianism marched alongside those against fracking, together they gave their voices to the big issue of climate change.
“Whilst each group might be seen as small, perhaps, and demonstrating for relatively small changes, together these groups were a force to be reckoned with.”
She adds: “My idea for GoingItGreen.com was to combine the power of existing groups and green movements, by reflecting what I saw on the climate march.
“The website would provide green initiatives with a place to advertise themselves, and to get recognition! And alongside them, the website would include retailers, research teams, ecological charities, any organisation or other website with a green agenda, to form a green supermarket!”
Heather has set the site up with the help of inheritance money from her mother, and is currently finding out how much support there is for such a service.
Companies and groups which would be interested in being listed, and people who might want to use the service, are invited to register their interest at: http://goingitgreen.com/
