Built on the site of the Aquarena swimming pool and leisure centre in Brighton Road, which was demolished starting in November 2017, the complex of 141 apartments is due to be completed this year.

The controversial tower block appears to be nearing completion - and followers of the Worthing Herald's Facebook page were vocal in their feelings.

Julian Cox said: "Looks fantastic. Looking forward to seeing it finished. Excellent regeneration of the area. Worthing needs more of this."

But Robert Yates said: "Too tall and dominating for a formerly pleasant bit of coastline. Not aesthetically pleasing.

"Worthing has had a habit since the sixties of slowly destroying the local character, history and charm of what was once a classic seaside town."

Susan Chewter concurred, adding with more than a hint of sarcasm: "It’s about as visually pleasing and original as an M+S with a multi-storey car park placed on a Victorian seafront . Thank goodness that never happened here."

Rebecca Blake felt the tower was too high. She said: "You can see the top of the flats protruding above the hills on the Bostal Road [in Steyning]. A blot on the landscape quite frankly."

Patrick Fitzhenry said: "I'd love one if they could lower the price for working class people and not yuppie types from London to have as holiday homes."

In response to the negative comments, Greg Binstead said: "Honestly some people like it some don’t as is the case with pretty much everything.

"Think people just like to whinge for the sake of whinging."

Sarah Reeve added: "I feel sorry for the people in the houses next to them who've had their natural light blocked."
