Bold move for Worthing Rotary Carnival

TOOK the family away on holiday last week and on our return, my daughter Amy hotfooted it from Gatwick to take part in the first ever Sunday Rotary Carnival as part of Worthing Musical Comedy Society's Beauty and the Beast float, which won them first prize in their class.

The decision to move from the traditional August Bank Holiday date was a bold move by all our hard-working local Rotary clubs, and I think that although in certain quarters it was deemed too close to the Broadwater Carnival two weeks before, overall the move has been a resounding success, and I'm sure next year's parade will be bigger and better.

On the subject of my holiday, an urban myth, albeit continental, was destroyed.

Despite the fact there were no Germans staying in our hotel, there was much early, and I mean early, morning activity of towels being placed on sun beds.

In fact, four days in, the commander in chief, or Frau Hart as I will now call her, adopted a policy of if you can't beat them join them, and dispatched me down to the pool with said towels.

It will be an end of an era tomorrow when "Disco" Dave Hunt leaves the Splash FM breakfast show, and for me his passing off the airwaves marks the ending of another chapter.

Hard to believe, I know, but I turned 46 this Tuesday, but I can tell you exactly where I was on the corresponding Tuesday 28 years and one week ago.

I spent my last Tuesday night as a 17-year-old, possibly where I spent the majority of my Tuesdays in that year, enjoying Disco Dave live at his residency at the Tiroler Bar in the Guildbourne Centre.

With a very lenient bar policy, Tuesday nights were a real event back then, with Dave taking centre stage.

As the news has filtered through about his departure from the radio station in various quarters, the rumour mill has apparently gone into overdrive.

I myself know you cannot quit a long-running radio programme of your own accord without the obligatory whispers of jumping before being pushed or dressed-up sackings.

In my mind, there is no doubt Dave has decided to leave totally of his own volition, both for family reasons, i.e., the early morning starts, and his external business commitments.

I make no secret of the fact he is a close personal friend of mine, and while I will miss him in the mornings, I fully understand his reasons for going.

On behalf of all of your many listeners, thanks for entertaining us, and enjoy your "retirement", although I doubt Worthing has heard the last of you!

Just before I went away, I asked about Fiesta Fortnight and almost immediately the legendary Shirley Western took the time and trouble to get in touch with some very interesting snippets.

I'm hoping to catch up with Shirley this week and will furnish you with some definitive information in the coming weeks.
