A timely reminder of what really matters ...

TWO tales of triumph through adversity have been presented to Observer readers through different circumstances lately.

But both examples have shown that, with reserves of courage, some happiness can come from the most dire situations.

The leader of the gang who held a young mum and her daughter at gun point as hoodlums ransacked their home has rightly had his appeal for a shorter sentence turned down.

The appeal judge correctly pointed out it was the psychological impact of Michael Saldana's actions as much as the crime itself which deserved punishment.

The victim, Jo Mooney, found herself having to overcome the long term effects of the experience.

But Jo proved in last week's Observer, that with the right attitude it's possible to emerge from traumatic experiences and enjoy life.

Ignoring the advice of concerned university officers, she successfully completed a nursing diploma and is due to start her dream job in an intensive care unit.

Observer readers will find a similar example of positivity in the story of Nobby and Ann Clark.

The couple couldn't celebrate their golden wedding anniversary last year because Nobby was having his leg amputated after being diagnosed with cancer.

But the pair have battled through and on Sunday will celebrate an extra special 51st anniversary.

Sadly, Nobby's cancer has returned, but the couple are determined to make the best of the time they have left.

This week they tell the heart-warming story of how they will celebrate and say 'thank you' to each other for a long and successful marriage.

Neither Jo Mooney's situation nor Nobby and Ann's experience would be wished on anyone.

Unfortunately, many people will be able to relate to the problem of times being tough for them personally.

But the brave Bexhillians have shown that with the right attitude, life can still bring plenty of joy.

As the town battles with its own perceived problems, they set an example to us all.
