Column: Remembering our local heritage

As we approach Armistice day in this year of the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI, it is more important than ever to remember our local heritage.

You could say that where Worthing goes, the rest of the UK follows. Whether it is wiping the floor with Worcester in National Cup basketball, hosting the world famous Birdman competition or providing back drops to Oscar Wilde plays - Worthing sets standards that others strive to follow.

Honouring those that serve in our armed forces is no exception. As a result of Worthing Combined Ex-Services Association’s inventiveness and determination, Worthing was the first town in the country to mark Armed Forces Day. Following Worthing’s example, Armed Forces Day has become a national event.

As we approach Armistice day this anniversary year, it is more important than ever that we remember our local heritage.

Shoreham airfield, site of ‘those marvelous men in their flying machines’ in the 1910s, saw action in both World Wars. Shoreham airfield was used to land spy planes in the First World War, and as the location at which the Dieppe landings were planned in the Second World War.

While remembering past conflicts, we also keep in mind the young and living veterans. Young veterans are still returning from Afghanistan, and they may need our help to adjust.

It is always moving to see the large number of young people who get involved and wear their poppies with pride. This year, I am sure, will be no exception.
