KEVIN KING: Fabulous evening at the Splash FM Garden Party

Didn’t we have a lovely time, the day we went to... Worthing... as the group Fiddler’s Dram very nearly sang back in 1979.

Last weekend saw another great Sussex event, the Splash FM Garden Party, where I and my fellow radio chums were hosting a brilliant night of live music to a very enthusiastic (which is not necessarily a euphemism for squiffy) audience of over 4,000.

The evening got off to a great start with local band Murdoch’s Crazy Eyes whipping everyone up into a sing-a-long frenzy with a brilliant non-stop set of hits closely followed by the equally talented Alice Band, fronted by the incredible voice of Rachel Hawker; their version of Jocelyn Brown’s ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’ got everybody well into the mood for a party.

Add to those the wonderful vocal harmonies of Violet (three girls, three mics and a heck of lot of talent) and we were ready for the main attractions of the evening, Rule The World, who did an uncannily accurate tribute to Take That (complete with a ‘Jason’ who must be feeling that his job is on shaky ground) and Chic Le Freak who, you’ll not be surprised to read, really ripped up the night with a dazzling tribute to the music of Chic and Nile Rogers.

With the weather very much on our side it really was a fabulous evening and even though I’d hardly had time to catch my breath I was asked by quite a few revellers as to who would be performing at the party next year, which reminded me of some of the wonderfully pun-tastic names that tribute bands choose in honour of their heroes.

Perhaps we could go for the Reet Hot Chilli Peppers, and yes they are from Newcastle, or how about those Dave Grohl fans, The Faux Fighters?

Seeing as we know that Liam and Noel Gallagher will not getting back together any day soon we could book Oasish with, perhaps, support from Proxy Music, Deft Leppard, Coldplace, Razorlike, Not The Hoople and a heavy metal tribute to everyone’s favourite Swedish quartet Abbatoir!

Brilliant! Roll on 2016.
