Rye and Battle remembers

The war affected every village and town across our area.

Six brothers from Hurst Green and Salehurst volunteered to fight - ordinary men who worked as farmers and milkmen - five never returned.

Sussex played its part with the Sussex Regiment losing nearly 1,500 men in one battle alone - an event known in military history as ‘The Day Sussex Died’.

Villages and towns held a number of events this week and last weekend to remember those who fell, ranging from exhibitions to buglers playing the Last Post.

Many homes across the area had a single candle burning in their windows on Monday night to show that nothing is forgotten despite a century passing.

We have one of the busiest beach resorts on the south coast at Camber with up to 25,000 people descending on the beach on sunny days.

The small team who work hard to ensure the safety of those on the beach deserve our recognition and thanks.
