ST BARNABAS: Providing education and training for external healthcare providers

Education has played a key part in the St Barnabas vision, ever since 1978 when our founder Dr Gusterson and his successor Dr Kingsbury strongly advocated the provision of a conference room at the hospice.

They believed a conference room was a necessity because we were being asked to undertake more and more explanations of our work to professionals in medical, nursing and social fields.

In 1983 we introduced an education service and since then education has become an integral part of the services that we provide.

We now offer education and training on a wide range of subjects, including palliative care and end of life care, to our own staff, and external health and social care providers.

Education is provided for those who work across various settings, such hospitals, residential and nursing homes and in the patient’s own home.

During 2016-17 more than 1,800 health and social care professionals attended various palliative care events at the hospice, arranged by our education department, and 84 per cent of delegates rated the training as ‘excellent’.

Part of our five-year clinical strategy has been to expand our education department with the overall objective of enhancing the care that is delivered to people at the end of life and support for their loved ones.

I am very proud that we are able to continue to develop the vision of Dr Gusterson and Dr Kingsbury all those years ago.
