TECHNOLOGY: The low down on Instagram

It is an app for phones, designed to be used on the go to share moments all but instantaneously.

Like Twitter, users amass followers who see their posts.

These posts can include hashtags, helping to categorise them under specific themes and content.

Others are then given the opportunity to ‘like’ them or even write a comment.

Unlike Twitter, where posts usually consist of a 140-character message, here the emphasis lies very firmly on sharing photos and videos.

Users are encouraged to enhance their existing pictures with a range of filters and effects before making them public.

It is easy to get started with.

Simply download free of charge from the app store onto your phone and follow the steps to create an account.

Before uploading a picture, it is important to remember that Instagram is, by default, public.

This means that anyone can see what you post.

Change the settings if you would prefer your account to be private and only people who follow you will be able to view your photos.
