VET’s VIEW: Time to say goodbye after over 30 years of memories

When I was a student, our college motto – Venienti Occurrite Morbo – often provoked discussion as to its precise meaning.

And whilst there would always be some wag who’d come up with an amusing interpretation, the best translation, as we understood it, was ‘meet or confront disease at its onset’, in essence, ‘prevention is better than cure’.

For me, the motto is a reminder that veterinary medicine, like so much in life, is about a journey, and as we seek to arrive at the cause of disease, it’s a process that has its fair share of frustrations, it is true.

But we vets are privileged to have a role that is also uniquely rewarding.

Seeing our patients respond to an intervention we have made is immensely satisfying in itself, but we also benefit from feedback from our clients.

It is one of the reasons I have been keen to emphasise in this column the importance of the relationship between vet and owner: you work with us in the course of our investigations, and we share your joys (and occasional sorrows) at the end.

For me, now, one particular journey is coming to an end, as I retire from Northdale Veterinary Practice.

It’s over 30 years since I returned to my hometown.

The intervening period has brought a lot of happy memories, thanks in no small part to the many clients I have met along the way, so it’s not without some sadness that I say farewell today.

Of course I leave behind a great team, some of whom have been working with Northdale since the beginning.

Like all in our profession, they will continue doing their best to confront disease at its onset, and I hope you will be able to share many joys with them in the future.
