VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Can you give a little of your time to help one of these local organisations?

Do you have some time to spare? Perhaps you're at a loose end while the kids are at school or you've retired and are looking for something to fill your day?

Volunteering can be a great way to spend some of your free time; you could be helping a local charity or organisation, while at the same time gaining new skills and experiences, meeting new people and making new friends.

Volunteer member – Littlehampton and District Lions Club

The aim of the Littlehampton and District Lions Club is to help people of all ages who are less fortunate than themselves through a wide variety of fundraising events and some hands-on projects.

They need to recruit some new members to bolster their membership.

Members would be required to assist at local fundraising events throughout the year such as; fetes, carnivals and Christmas collections.

No experience is required, you just need to have a caring nature and a good sense of humour.

Curriculum support – Arundel C of E School

Adults are needed with special knowledge of topics the school uses in lessons to bring learning alive.

Volunteers will be assigned a teacher/class exploring a particular topic and together they will tailor the volunteer opportunity; approximately an hour a week.

You must have a warm personality, with the ability to engage small children in conversation, good listening skills, the ability to work closely with teachers/teaching assistants and the head teacher, a good sense of humour, a good understanding of the ethos of the school and be reliable.

You must be over 18 for this role.

Befriending buddy – SASBAH (Sussex Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus)

SASBAH’s aim is to allow people with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus to lead a full and independent life, linking them with volunteers who help them socialise and enjoy leisure activities such as going out to the cinema, pub or simply having a chat over a coffee.

More befriending buddies are required to be matched with people.

This may be on a one-to-one basis or in a group.

They are looking for people with a sense of humour and who are willing to ‘have a go’.

Age and sex are unimportant (although many of their members are in their early 30s).

Drivers and trustees – Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport

The purpose of Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport is to provide transport to the local community by means of minibuses, a dial-a-ride service and a social car scheme.

It is there to provide easy affordable transport to people who are unable to use public transport.

They are looking for drivers to drive their own cars, the dial-a-ride car or their minibus.

You must have a clean driving license and be flexible and outgoing.

They also need more trustees to help run the charity, to enable them to move forward due to an increase in bookings for the services.
