VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Do you want to help your community?

Sixty per cent of people who volunteer say they do so because they want to improve things or help people. If you'd like to help people in your community or improve your local neighbourhood, here are just a few of the ways you could get involved.

Receptionist/admin assistant – Arun Counselling Centre

Arun Counselling Centre offers open-ended counselling (clients can be seen for up to three years) for people presenting with depression, anxiety states, phobias and/or bereavement issues.

They have 24 volunteer counsellors supervised in groups of four by experienced and qualified supervisors overseen by the clinical director/head of service.

They are looking for volunteers to manage incoming telephone calls and messages, record information, liaise with all ACC personnel, update information on computer and take referrals from new clients.

You will need good communication skills and at least basic computer skills, and be able to adhere to client confidentiality.

Fun and Breaks volunteer – Fun and Breaks (FAB)

Fun and Breaks (FAB) exists to support disabled children and their families by providing regular and reliable short breaks which are stimulating and enjoyable, and to promote positive experiences with new friendships, social activities and supportive relationships with carers.

Volunteers are matched with a disabled child and their family to give them a short break of two hours a week or four hours a fortnight.

Volunteers do a variety of activities with the child while they are in their care.

The coordinator will take care to match your interest and skills with the child.

You will have the opportunity to build a relationship with a child and give them and their family valuable support while having a fulfilling time yourself.

Volunteers and the family receive the ongoing support of the coordinator and training is given to volunteers both when they join the service and at regular intervals thereafter.

Country centre support volunteer – Ferring Country Centre

Ferring Country Centre (FCC) is looking for volunteers to support clients and customers with learning and physical disabilities, as well as to help with the running of the centre itself.

Departments where volunteers can help include: riding therapy unit, cafe, small animal farm, administration and fundraising.

FCC recognises the value provided by volunteers and aims to ensure their work is enjoyable and rewarding; volunteers can make a significant contribution to the work of the centre.

Volunteers do not need specific experience in social care, but must be committed to FCC’s customer group and help with their development and work-based training.

Wheelchair/scooter maintenance and repair – Littlehampton Shopmobility

Littlehampton Shopmobility exists to ensure that people with mobility problems enjoy their shopping experiences and help to maintain their independent lives.

They have a range of manual wheelchairs and powered scooters that require maintenance and repair.

Some of the tasks include: checking and repairing wheelchair/rollator brakes, replacing tyres, charging batteries and cleaning.

Volunteers maybe required to adjust days and times to cover illness and holidays.
