VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Volunteering can make you happier

A recent study by volunteering website {https://do-it.org/|www.do-it.org|click here} has revealed that volunteering helps us find new friends, improves our mental health and three quarters of us would be more likely to volunteer if the boss gave us time off to do it.

According to the survey of over 1,400 volunteers, almost all of the respondents said that volunteering benefited them in some way, whether that’s in terms of making new friends, gaining new skills or just a general feeling of satisfaction and fulfilment.

Seasonal assistant groundsperson – Littlehampton Sportsfield Trust

The Littlehampton Sportsfield aims to create, develop, coordinate and promote opportunities for all the community to participate in sport, physical activity and recreation leading to an improved quality of life, health, social and emotional well-being.

They are looking for a volunteer to provide assistance to the groundsman with various duties including pitch rolling, grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming and other seasonal work.

While driving a tractor or triple mowers on site will be a requirement, training will be given and there will be no driving on public highways.

Van driver and treasurer – Sussex Steel

Sussex Steel teaches people to play steelpan in schools and workshops and runs several bands of varying ages and abilities.

From their Littlehampton base they are looking for drivers to help move their instruments short local journeys for rehearsals and provide transportation to gigs in the Sussex/Surrey area.

Opportunities exist for volunteers at all levels of time commitment – from one short journey a month to regular/longer trips.

They are also looking for someone to look after the financial aspects of the charity and be the main contact with their accountants.

Duties will include: expenses, payments, banking, wages and cashflow. This role can be carried out in your own home but you will be required to attend monthly trustee meetings.

Volunteer recovery coach, Family coach and community coach – Emerging Futures CIC

Emerging Futures CIC believes that everyone has the potential to grow, learn and achieve the best they can in everything they do.

They are looking for volunteers to work in the community supporting people in recovery from addiction; working towards building a recovery community across West Sussex.

Role requirements are as follows: recovery coach – in their own sustained recovery for six months or more; family coach – have experience of family member addiction; community coach – want to make a difference in their community.

You must be over 18 for this role and a DBS check will be required.

Wheelchair/scooter maintenanceand repair – Littlehampton Shopmobility

Littlehampton Shopmobility exists to ensure that people with mobility problems enjoy their shopping experiences and help to maintain their independent lives.

They have a range of manual wheelchairs and powered scooters that require maintenance and repair. Some of the tasks are: checking and repairing wheelchair/rollator brakes, replacing tyres, charging of batteries and cleaning.

Volunteers maybe required to adjust days and times to cover illness and holidays.
