Delivery could hold that key

I WAS sorry to read Elaine Ansell's letter criticising the delivery St Mark's Gospel by her local church.

Pamphlet not well received.

In my mailbox in recent days, I have received the Property Weekly, an invitation to sell my house, a pizza offer, a broadband offer and various pieces of political literature.

This is the world we live in and I believe it is perfectly proper to deliver information about the life of Jesus.

(However if Elaine had a notice up saying she did not want unsolicited mail, I apologise unreservedly. If that happened, our training was at fault.)

Regarding the forward by our mayor, I am sure Nol Atkins doesn't need me to defend him.

We were very grateful to receive his offer to endorse the delivery of the gospels, not least because it helped to show that it was not a fringe group involved in the initiative.

To me, it is totally appropriate that a public figure should endorse something he believes in.

It was not for profit, nor for electoral advantage. It is good for our public figures to show what they believe in rather than hide it away in case it loses votes.

On both these issues, it seems the real question is whether Christians have the right to say what they believe in public.

I hope as our democratic process unfolds in the next few weeks, no-one will actually deny that.

As the clergyman who co-ordinated the distribution of the gospels for all the churches involved (some 10,000 gospels in total were delivered), I hope that it was appreciated by most and that they will find the time to look at and read the gospel.

We live in an age where more and more have not read the actual words of Jesus, yet I believe they hold the key to new spiritual life. So, if you received a gospel, do have a look and see what he said - it may be surprising!
