Greener world begins at home

REGULAR readers of this column will know that I often highlight the power of small actions by the many to make massive environmental improvements.

I'm a sucker for messages such as "if everybody were to turn their television off rather than leave it on standby, the UK could close one power station".

I was particularly interested then to see the launch of a new initiative called the Future Friendly Awards.

This is a scheme that has been set up by Waste Watch, Waterwise and the Energy Savings Trust in association with Proctor and Gamble.

The idea of the scheme is to promote sustainability within the home and especially focusing on water and energy use and the amount of solid waste that is thrown away.

In addition to the generic campaign, there is an award of a 20,000 bursary for the winner, with half to be paid towards the work that has already been put in place and the remainder based on consultancy time to provide advice on the next steps.

You can apply to the award scheme as an individual, community or group and you can even nominate yourself!

No ideas are off limits, so long as they fit the general ethos of promoting sustainability.

Your project could be in the shape of a blog, a documentary film, performance, community forum or even a song.

Last year's winners had developed an allotment for the whole community to enjoy.

Entrants will be judged by a panel and five projects will be shortlisted for the main prize.

All five shortlisted projects will have a chance to make a short film showcasing their initiative to be included on the Future Friendly website.

If you know of a group or individual that deserves wider recognition, or even if you want to blow your own trumpet, why not send in a nomination?

You can do this online at www.futurefriendly.co.uk/awards . The application process takes only about two minutes but you'll have to get your thinking caps on quickly as the closing date is tomorrow (January 23) at midnight.
