Highdown Rotary takes over from Worthing Steyne club
Six months old, the new Rotary club, Highdown Rotary, has taken over from the Rotary Club of Worthing Steyne and is handling many of its projects with some new ones, all its own.
We are proud to continue to operate in the town and communities, looking to help with your projects and schemes and support you if we can.
We want to do this alongside the many other Rotary schemes which we support and take place nationally and further afield, for example working to end polio worldwide, providing clean water wells in Africa and India, protecting marine life in the Philippines and turning teenagers away from crime in Canada. There is more news about these and other projects at www.rotary.org/en/news-features.
This month is special as a time of remembrance for the fallen from the Great War, the Second World War and other later wars and battles. We were honoured to represent Rotary in the town, together with the other two Rotary clubs, to show our respects as part of the town’s Remembrance Day service last weekend.
We were also able to send some club members to join a smaller service with students from Chatsmore Catholic High School in Beach House Park at the town’s memorial for the First World War Battle of Boar’s Head to pay our respects to the fallen from the Royal Sussex Regiment.
This battle took place at Richebourg in France, a village with close connections to Worthing then and up to today.
The memorial plot now includes smaller markers for several soldiers from the Regiment lost in the battle to give the memorial a closer, informative feeling and to be a remarkable symbol of remembrance and worthy of a visit.
Looking forward, our next project takes place at the beginning of December when we stage a heat with St Andrew’s High School in the Rotary Young Chef competition, a four-stage national competition to support and encourage development of cookery skills of young people in full-time education.
We are looking forward to helping out and being part of the judging panel of the various meals the students will produce.
With Christmas coming along soon, we have booked Father Christmas to help with our plans to raise money for charity. We start on Saturday, December 1, at Goring Road market when we hope to collect donations, with musicians to provide festive music and just to meet everybody. If you are there, come along and say hello.
Before then, our group next meets on Monday evening at The North Star in Littlehampton Road. If you would like to come along, meet us and hear more about our plans for the next few months, please call the number below to confirm when we will meet.
